What to Do: Wednesday, May 7th, 2014

Looking for something fun to do tonight? It’s hump day, so let’s celebrate making it through this much of the week and go do something fun tonight in the Big Easy.

Instead of hanging out that usual dive bar or at a friend’s house, here are a few things you can do with friends and get the chance to enjoy the beautiful city.

Wednesday at the Square

Considering how beautiful the weather is today, it would be a shame if you weren’t outside. When you get off of work today, you might as well head straight downtown to Lafayette Square and enjoy the Youth Leadership Council’s 12-week concert series known as “Wednesday at the Square.” Today’s performances will be The Iguanas, an awesome local band that combines Latin sounds with New Orleans jazz and American rock ‘n roll. You’ll be dancing up a storm! They just released their new album Juarez so if you are digging them, go ahead and pick it up! Check out the video of their song “Lo Ultimo” at the 2012 Jazz Festival.

OTRA will also be featured this evening in Wednesdays at the Square. They describe their unique sound as “Afro-Cubano Jazz and Grooves.” Sounds like the perfect band for a perfect day in New Orleans. So grab some grass or start salsa dancing your way downtown. You won’t regret it.

Adventures in Wonderland

Go enjoy and be a part of the theater tonight!
Go enjoy and be a part of the theater tonight!

If you would like more theatrics than music in your evening, head to the Sculpture Garden in City Park to see “Adventures in Wonderland.” Opening tonight and presented to you by NOMA and The NOLA Project, this is a kind of interactive theater that you have never seen before. Tickets are $18 for general admission but students with an ID, NOMA members and children 7-17 (children under 7 are not permitted) are only $12. You get to be a player in the show rather than just staying in your seat so bring your walking shoes. When you purchase your ticket, you’ll pick a path of:

  • The Red Queen’s Slow Walking Path
  • The Cheshire Cat’s Fast Track
  • The Mad-Hatter’s Sit Down Tea Party

This would be a great date night idea or just something fun and different for you and your friends to do on an otherwise boring Wednesday evening. Seating begins at 6 PM and you can purchase tickets at the gate. Go and support the local arts as well as these great New Orleans organizations! See more about this awesome event at The NOLA Project’s home page.

NOLA Night at the Rendezvous Tavern

If you haven’t spent a night (and probably the next morning) enjoying the libations from Rendezvous Tavern, you best get started now. NOLA Night at the Tavern isn’t just a happy hour, it’s a happy evening that includes all your New Orleans favorites:

  • $2.50 Old New Orleans Rum
    All Night Long, baby
    All Night Long, baby
  • $2.50 NOLA Brew both Brown and Blonde
  • $2.50 Abita bottle and draft (except Andygator and Satsuma)

Best part of this Wednesday night drink special? It goes “til whenever.” Yeah, that’s exactly what I need for my mid-week power drink session.

So go enjoy some outdoor music or participate in some interactive theater and afterwards drinks and dinner with the friends and family. Whatever you decide, today’s schedule just proves that there is always something to do in New Orleans.
