Meschiya Lake & the Little Big Horns

These New Orleans veterans offer a glimpse into music traditions of the past while still staying relevant to the present. If Meschiya’s voice isn’t enough to convince you, nothing is.

Spotted Cat Music Club. 623 Frenchmen St. Free!

Wednesday, July 2nd

Tank & The Bangas

This soul/spoken word/R&B group is starting off their July residency at The Maple Leaf this Wednesday. Be sure to check them out, and keep going back on Wednesdays for more.

Maple Leaf Bar. 8316 Oak St. Usually a cover of $10.

Thursday, July 3rd

The Soul Rebels

Anytime you see this band on a calendar, you better clear your schedule. The Soul Rebels are a New Orleans classic and never get old.

Le Bon Temps Roulé. 4801 Magazine St. Might have a cover, so bring cash.

Friday, July 4th

Ought (w/ Dub Thompson)

This post punk group from Montreal almost sounds like melodic noise punk. It’s very early Modest Mouse-ish, which is enough to convince me. Plus, I always love shows at Gasa Gasa.

Gasa Gasa. 4920 Freret St. Tickets are $8.00

Sweet Crude

I’ve recommended them before, and I’ll do it again. Sweet Crude is what you get when you mix Southern Louisiana culture with indie folk-pop. 12 Mile Limit is throwing a 4th of July party with food trucks and music, so this isn’t one to miss. I’m in this video, find me for a prize.

12 Mile Limit. 500 S. Telemachus.

Saturday, July 5th

Questlove + Soul Sister

Seriously, need I say more? The Roots veteran and current bandleader of The Tonight Show is a must see for this Saturday. YOU GUYS NEED TO SEE THIS SHOW.

Tipitina’s. 501 Napoleon Ave. Tickets are $25.

Sunday, July 6th

Hot 8 Brass Band

If you didn’t get your fill of brass earlier in the week with Soul Rebels, this Sunday has your cure.

Howlin’ Wolf – The Den. 907 S. Peters St. Tickets are $10.

Enjoy the music and keep it funky ya’ll? Are you in a band? Have friends performing in your parent’s garage? Tell us about it in our Comments Section!
